Mastering Content Creation: Tips for Vertical Movies, 4:3 Shorts, and Podcasts

Creating content today means choosing the right format to tell your story effectively. Whether you are making a vertical movie to draw viewers in on a daily basis for your dramatic story, a short film in the classic 4:3 aspect ratio aimed at being an festival award winner, or producing a podcast, each format presents unique creative and technical challenges. Lets jump in with some ideas that helps you as a creator connect with audiences and holds their attention.

Working with Vertical Movies

Vertical movies have exploded in the last couple of years driven by content created in China and now worldwide. They hook audiences into daily viewing like a soap opera in a short format and have taken the tropes and ideas from American Soap Operas and Korean Dramas and shortened them into catchy stories. Shooting vertical requires a different approach to framing, pacing, and storytelling.

Key Technical Challenges

  • Limited horizontal space: You have less room to show wide scenes or multiple characters side by side.

  • Sound can be limited or hear in ear by the view with Airpods or similar

  • Audience expectations: Viewers often watch vertical videos on the go, so content needs to be engaging from the first second.

  • Technical constraints: Cameras and editing software are traditionally designed for horizontal formats, so adjustments are necessary.

Creative Solutions

  • Focus on a single subject: Closeups are key and medium shots to emphasize emotions and details.

  • Use vertical composition techniques: Leading lines, vertical symmetry, and layered depth can make shots visually interesting.

  • Keep scenes simple and direct: Avoid cluttered backgrounds, simple sets and locations are best and should move the story forward

  • Plan for mobile sound: Use clear dialogue and sound effects that work well on small speakers or headphones.

  • Actors should be extra emotive. While not play acting, they can vamp it up a bit.

  • Camera movement should be limited and only move the story forward. Sorry Spielberg.....

Practical Example

Imagine a short vertical movie about a street musician. Instead of wide shots of the street, focus on the musician’s hands on the instrument, facial expressions, and reactions from passersby. Use vertical framing to capture the musician’s full height and the environment above and below, like the sky or pavement, to add context.

Creating Shorts in 4:3 Aspect Ratio

The 4:3 aspect ratio is a classic format that was standard for television and early films. It offers a boxier frame compared to the modern widescreen but still has its place in storytelling.

Key Challenges

  • Balancing composition: The almost square frame requires careful placement of subjects to avoid awkward empty spaces.

  • Audience familiarity: Many viewers are used to widescreen, so 4:3 can feel unusual if not used intentionally.

  • Technical compatibility: Some platforms and devices may crop or stretch 4:3 videos if not handled properly. You must output finised format to fit properly in the service it will be streamed on. (i.e adding side letterboxing if on YouTube)

Creative Solutions

  • Use the frame’s symmetry: Center subjects or use balanced compositions to create a pleasing visual flow.

  • Highlight vertical elements: Tall objects, standing characters, or architectural features work well in 4:3.

  • Play with negative space: Empty areas can emphasize isolation, tension, or focus on a subject.

  • Embrace the retro feel: Use 4:3 to evoke nostalgia or a timeless atmosphere.

Practical Example

For a 4:3 short film about a detective in a small town, frame scenes to show the detective standing in doorways or narrow streets. Use the vertical space to highlight the character’s posture and the environment’s mood. Negative space around the character can suggest loneliness or mystery.

Producing Engaging Podcasts

While Podcasts used to rely entirely on audio, more podcasts have added a video element as a main component. At first it was just boring Zoom calls, but now has grown to be complete sets and styles that stand out from the crowd of litterly hundreds of thousands of podcasts.

Key Challenges

  • Maintaining audiences attention: The content must be compelling and clear. Both with the story and the visual ideas.

  • Move away from the promote the guests latests, book, movie, idea and into content that connects and can affect the audience whether its an intimate look at the guest or a subject that is fascinating or informative.

  • Sound quality: Poor audio can quickly lose an audience. Good mics are key, but also can be a bad look on camera. Need to find a compromise

  • Structure and pacing: Podcasts need a rhythm that keeps listeners interested over time.

Creative Solutions

  • Strong storytelling: Deep context is important. If its aaninterview podcast the interviewer should be both prepared but also have some outside throws for the guest. Think Tim Ferriss... If its a story podcast using vivid descriptions, character voices, and soundscapes to paint pictures in the listener’s mind.

  • Clear audio setup: Invest in a good microphone, reduce background noise, and edit carefully.

  • Segment your content: Break episodes into sections with music or sound cues to signal changes.

  • Engage with your audience: Include Q&A, interviews, or listener stories to build connection.

Practical Example

A podcast about urban legends can use voice actors for different characters, background sounds like footsteps or city noise, and a clear narrative arc. This approach helps listeners visualize the story and stay hooked.

When conducting an interview podcast one might start with inquiries about the interviewee's morning routines or daily habits "What does your morning routine look like, and how does it set the tone for your day?". "What are some of your favorite books or resources that have significantly influenced your life?" "What is one of the biggest failures you’ve experienced, and what did you learn from it?"

Ultimately, an interview that employs questions that can reach over the standard interivew and create a tapestry of insights, blending practical advice with deep philosophical reflections. This approach not only provides listeners with actionable takeaways but also inspires them to think critically about their own lives, habits, and aspirations.

Tips to Connect and Get Attention Across Formats

No matter which format you choose, some principles apply to all content creation:

  • Know your audience: Tailor your content style, length, and tone to what your viewers or listeners prefer.

  • Start strong: Capture attention in the first few seconds or minutes with a hook or intriguing question.

  • Keep it focused: Avoid unnecessary details that dilute your main message.

  • Use pacing wisely: Mix fast and slow moments to maintain interest.

  • Test and adapt: Review feedback and analytics to improve future projects.
